I’m excited to be sharing a discussion I had with Ryan from Southwest Upholstery.

Like most in this industry, no two businesses are the same but there were many common values and concerns between us. It was also really clear that we both not only want to leave the industry in a better place, but also future proof it for the next generation.

Southwest Upholstery runs on a bigger scale than my business, covering both the domestic and contract markets, making lots of bespoke high quality furniture in multiples, also offering a reupholstery service and their own apprenticeship scheme to help ensure their business is around for future generations.
Our chat highlights the key issues that concern us both, together with the possible solutions for future-proofing the industry, but more importantly it emphasises once again how positive collaboration is rather than competition.

A Blended Business Model: Domestic and Commercial Upholstery

Ryan’s business operates with two distinct arms: domestic upholstery and a commercial division. This allows them to handle bespoke, one-off projects for private domestic clients, while also catering to larger contracts like restaurants, pubs, hotels and office buildings. Designing well built furniture that lasts, enabling these businesses to reupholster again in the future, rather than throwing away and buying new again. Developing long standing business relationships built on quality and trust.

In contrast, I am much more focused on the domestic market, educating the public through my marketing about sustainability and the value of investing in well-crafted, long-lasting furniture, breaking the 4 year throw away cycle.

For me, convincing customers to reupholster rather than replace is a constant challenge! People often assume that reupholstery is comparable in price to buying new, but fail to consider the quality, attention to detail, filling and frame integrity, fabric durability and environmental impact of their decisions when buying new fast furniture from retailers.

These items are often put together by tackers who attach pre-cut foam padding and fabric on one section of a piece of furniture ie. the inside back, then it goes down the line to the next tacker that will do the arms etc, unlike upholsterers who have the skills to work on the entire piece of furniture from frame up, whether its 2 years old or 200 years old.

It’s the equivalent of comparing a wedding dress maker or tailor-made suit to one you can buy off the shelf made in their 1000’s, limited choice in colours and fabric, and not necessarily a good fit.

A good upholstery business offers a personalised, high-quality experience, where every detail, from fabric, padding, stuffings and trim are chosen and fitted specifically to the client’s needs. On the other hand, mass-produced options only focus is profitability and convenience rather than the perfect fit and durability.

A Touch of Technology

One of the interesting points Ryan raised was how Southwest Upholstery has embraced and invested in new technologies to streamline production, particularly for larger commercial jobs. The investment in machinery like the Pathfinder cutting machine has drastically cut down production times. Cutting a box cushion for example used to take their sewers 12 minutes by hand. It now takes just 12 seconds with this machine. This machine can quality check fabrics prior to cutting, factor in a pattern repeat, railroad if necessary, essentially getting the most from each metre of fabric, a saving in itself. All the elements that take an upholsterer a lot of time. This leap in efficiency has allowed them to handle larger orders without sacrificing the quality of their services.

Although some in the industry might be concerned that reliance on machinery could erode the traditional, hands-on craftsmanship that defines upholstery, they needn’t be. Technology used strategically moves the industry forward and allows SWU and commercial businesses like this to stay competitive; one-off, bespoke pieces still require the artisan touch but when it comes to larger volumes, machinery is indispensable. Our conversation naturally steered towards the future of upholstery and the skills the industry needs to keep it moving forward.

Labour Shortage: There May Be Trouble Ahead

A recurring theme throughout our conversation was the growing concern over the lack of new upholsterers entering the industry, particularly at a commercial level. Ryan explained that while Southwest Upholstery has implemented its own apprenticeship program, attracting young talent still remains a struggle. Many young people are unaware of upholstery as a viable career path, the industry lacks the same interest and visibility in schools and colleges, unlike other industries like fashion, interior design and even carpentry and other industry sectors like plumbing and electrical engineering.

I echoed these concerns, pointing out that while organisations like AMUSF (Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers) offer courses, they are often weighted heavily on traditional furniture and don’t fully prepare students for the demands and standards of modern or commercial upholstery. Because of the high cost of these courses, many being Monday to Friday 9-5pm, therefore difficult to do around full time work, it often relies on the need for a supportive partner or savings and giving up full time employment. This is the barrier for most, in particular the younger generation. The AMUSF therefore attracts a certain demographic for this reason and those that finish sometimes need further training to be commercially viable.

I myself underwent 2 years of additional very expensive full time “leisure” course training after completing an AMUSF course, I felt I wasn’t truly ready at the time, to take on the varied spectrum of projects that now come through my door. I didn’t dare touch a sofa, which are not touched on within these courses due to space and time constraints, until I was 2 years into my business, which was 5 years after I started training. Sofas are now my bread and butter.

Ryan echoed that the curriculum needs to be updated and more in-depth to meet today’s commercial standards – most finishing students of these courses wouldn’t be commercially ready with the course alone and there are simply more upholsterers retiring than are taking up the trade as a business or able to work in businesses like SWU where modern upholstery, volume, speed and precision is required from day one, to service the demanding contract market. I have spoken to a few furniture makers and the concern is the same for all.

Ryan shared how Southwest Upholstery has taken matters into their own hands by building an internal training centre. Their full-time teacher trains apprentices on-site, blending hands-on experience with structured education. This approach allows the company to train upholsterers with the exact skills they need, ensuring that their workforce is well-prepared for both domestic and commercial jobs. I truly believe hands-on paid apprenticeships in businesses are the way forward to bridge the skills gap.

Sustainability: A Shared Vision

We are both very concerned about sustainability in upholstery. I am known for my marketing message, where I showcase the importance of looking at what we already own (like our parents and grandparents) and breaking the “four-year throwaway cycle” of fast furniture.

Poorly made, mass-produced furniture ends up in landfills, contributing to toxic waste and environmental harm. My business model is centred on educating customers about the longevity of reupholstered pieces and the environmental impact of their furniture choices. So much so I have inadvertently become a sofa and chair matchmaker, where people offer me furniture to find homes for, and with a bit of reupholstery magic, it’s been very successful assisting the circular economy.

Ryan echoed these sentiments, sharing that Southwest Upholstery also prioritises sustainability, both in their products and their operations. For example, as well as owning and maintaining their own building which is no mean feat, they’ve invested in future-proofing it with solar panels creating a more energy-efficient workshop, and have upgraded their vans to be an Euro 6 clean fleet for greater fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. They are most definitely walking the walk.

He also noted that educating customers about the importance of quality materials is essential. Many people aren’t aware that something as simple as replacing cushions can extend the life of a sofa, and instead, they throw it out.

Our discussion also touched on the circular economy and the need for government policies to support much more sustainable recycling practices. The level of fly tipping has increased everywhere as the fees to collect furniture has increased and the places to actively donate furniture are now few and far between, because of the UK’s outdated Fire Retardant rules, which really hinders the circular economy.

We both agreed that more needs to be done to inform the public about alternatives to throwing away furniture, such as reupholstering or giving them easier ways to donate pieces to those that might need them.

Battling Misconceptions: Pricing and Quality

We also touched on the pricing challenges that upholsterers face when competing with furniture retailers. I mentioned how many customers baulk at the cost of reupholstering a sofa, not understanding that the craftsmanship, materials, and custom nature of the work can’t compare to buying new from many retailers. We create genuine one-off bespoke piece. Mass-produced furniture, on the other hand, is often cheaper upfront but much lower in quality, again adding to the throw away fast furniture mentality

Ryan shared his frustrations with the under-pricing strategies used by other upholstery companies that cut corners, offering lower quality work for rock-bottom prices. These practices hurt the industry as a whole, leading to a race to the bottom in terms of quality. He stressed the importance of standing firm on pricing and instead educating customers about the value of quality work. He also shared that Southwest Upholstery has made strides in being transparent about their pricing, listing indicative prices on their website to help set customer expectations early on.

Personally, I’m not set up for contract or large-volume work, I’ll leave that to the experts of which there are many producing high quality, investment furniture from design drawings through to installation. Upholsterers of the future rely on these quality pieces for reupholstering down the line.

Collaboration is Key

Towards the end of our conversation, we discussed the importance of collaboration within the upholstery industry. Too many upholsterers operate in isolation, competing rather than working together to raise the overall quality and visibility of the trade. The level of gatekeeping when I first started my business was a shock and nothing I had experienced before.

I’ve always been determined to change this which is why I offer mentoring to new upholsterers. I mentioned how upholsterers are often hesitant to share their methods or business strategies for fear of creating competition or criticism.

Ryan also believes that more collaboration is key to the future of upholstery. Southwest Upholstery has partnered with local colleges to help train the next generation of upholsterers and collaborated with other upholstery businesses including Leigh-Annne from Bristol Upholstery Collective. He suggested that more businesses should follow this model, not only to address the labour shortage but also to create a stronger support network for the industry.

The Future of Upholstery

Our conversation reveals both the challenges and the opportunities facing the upholstery industry. By embracing technology, addressing the labour shortage, educating customers, and focusing on sustainability and quality, upholsterers can future-proof the industry while continuing to provide a high-quality, bespoke service.

Upholstery remains a skilled craft, but as we both mention, it is one that must evolve with the times. From encouraging the next generation of upholsterers to adopting sustainable practices, the industry can adapt to meet modern demands.

The future of upholstery, I believe, lies in a delicate balance between tradition, design, innovation and ultimately a harmonious blend of craftsmen and women preserving the art of upholstery, while continuing to meet the demands of an ever changing world.

[32

post-35673","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-how-to-guides

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.1 -
