When you first get started in upholstery, the most important thing is to master the basics and practice, practice, practice.\u00a0With a bit of\u00a0patience\u00a0and by\u00a0starting with something simple, trust me, you will\u00a0gradually build your knowledge\u00a0and\u00a0confidence.\u00a0Before you know it, you\u2019ll be\u00a0tackling\u00a0more complex projects<\/a>. Imagine taking up running – you wouldn’t expect to complete a marathon straight away. Same thing with upholstery. If you choose an achievable transformation,\u00a0you\u00a0can\u00a0get familiar with the basics and build up to something like a sofa, or a precious antique chair\u00a0over time. Here are 5\u00a0projects I recommend to anyone just starting out…<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

1)\u00a0Chair with drop-in seat pad<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Possibly\u00a0the\u00a0easiest project to begin with\u00a0and also\u00a0one of the\u00a0most\u00a0common\u00a0pieces you\u2019ll\u00a0come across\u00a0at the tip, on an online marketplace or in a charity shop.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tips to success:<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The reason I recommend this for starters is\u00a0because you are going to learn the\u00a0fundamental\u00a0skills you need as an upholsterer here. Namely,\u00a0stripping back followed by creating the right\u00a0tension and a precise finish with your top fabric.\u00a0You won’t need to worry yourself yet with\u00a0anything else too technical, although\u00a0start thinking about how you can enhance\u00a0wood\u00a0colour and grain\u00a0with a few basic tricks. Bonus is that you’ll only need\u00a0minimal tools and\u00a0you’ll see a big transformation with a great fabric and a little repair work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

2)\u00a0Piano Stool<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Practical and multi-purpose, a piano stool is a\u00a0great introductory upholstery project<\/a> if\u00a0you\u2019re lucky\u00a0enough to own or come across one. They\u00a0may not be as\u00a0commonplace\u00a0as they once were, but providing extra seating when you need it, plus a\u00a0place for secret storage, it really is a functional\u00a0piece of furniture\u00a0to have around the house.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Depending on its condition, you may need to\u00a0replace hinges, which is a good lesson in basic\u00a0woodwork and repair. Knowing when things need\u00a0fixing or adjusting is all part of the skill of upholstery. Adding detail, like a hidden fabric on\u00a0the inside of the lid or a flash of colour with paint\u00a0can\u00a0soon take something from ordinary to\u00a0extraordinary.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I can’t stress enough how much you need to start SMALL. Especially if you’re picking a project to take along to a course or class. Most people underestimate the time things will take. A\u00a0pretty little\u00a0stool,\u00a0like this one, is ideal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Upholstery is full of surprises! Especially when you’re working with an older piece. Something on this scale will give you the opportunity to trouble shoot unexpected complications and\u00a0stillstand\u00a0a chance of completing the project successfully.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A telephone table or even a small bench seat is a good\u00a0project for transformation. The upholstery skills you’ll\u00a0need will be basic, but the results can be dramatic.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A removable, upholstered seat on any kind of furniture\u00a0will give you ample chance to practice your\u00a0fundamental skills. Because you’re working with a\u00a0rectangular shape, it means you don’t have to be an\u00a0expert at navigating curves and corners… Yet!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

5)\u00a0Ottoman<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I love the versatility and potential you get with an Ottoman. Whether it’s a place to store household bits and pieces or somewhere to rest your legs, it’s also a great beginner’s upholstery project to get stuck into.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tips to success:<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

No legs, backs or arms to worry about – just the art of a perfectly covered\u00a0top to master on most Ottomans.\u00a0If you\u2019re tackling a Lloyd Loom ottoman it\u2019s always a good idea to make sure the wicker work is in good condition. I sometimes like to spray paint the wicker to give the piece a whole new lease of life. When you\u2019re taking apart the lid from its hinges, take pictures at every stage so you know how to piece things back together.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
