This well-worn wing chair\u00a0came in looking ok, but experience tells me that\u2019s not always the case when you start to strip off the old fabric. This chair was about 20 years old and\u00a0while clearly loved\u00a0it looked\u00a0quite dated.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSTEP 2:\u00a0Closer Inspection<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAs always,\u00a0you start by taking off the bottom cloth and you can\u00a0start to\u00a0see some clues of where this re-make is\u00a0going.\u00a0I could see the springs embedded into the foam with no barrier cloth in between. This breaks down the foam, as every time the chair is sat on, the springs agitate the foam, which\u00a0in\u00a0turn starts to break down and turn to dust. Therefore,\u00a0the wear on the foam was too much.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nA simple layer of heavy fabric or hessian between would have meant the foam would have been ok to re-use.\u00a0On closer inspection, it\u2019s the same situation throughout the chair\u00a0–\u00a0the back springs had no barrier, nor did the arms.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSTEP 3: Laying the Foundations<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAll foam is removed, new stronger webbing is added to the arms, a hessian barrier is added on top of seat springs, back springs, as well as on top of the webs on the arms. The back foam and arm foam was ok to re-use as it was saved just in time. I always try and put as much of the existing\u00a0stuffings\u00a0back into the chair as possible, otherwise,\u00a0I\u00a0am adding to landfill.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u201cWhat really happens to ensure a chair lasts many more decades and is as good on its inside as it is on the outside, is more than you might imagine.\u201d<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSTEP 4: Take a Seat<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe seat foam was replaced.\u00a0You can also see that no barrier was placed between the original top fabric and the foam\u00a0and the same\u00a0applies here\u00a0– friction will break the foam down. So,\u00a0a generous layer of polyester was added before the new fabric was attached.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

STEP 12: Finishing Touches<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAt last,\u00a0it\u2019s time\u00a0to add the\u00a0bottom cloth\u00a0\u2013 always the very last part of the process followed by\u00a0a\u00a0final\u00a0good brush down.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The seat foam was replaced.\u00a0You can also see that no barrier was placed between the original top fabric and the foam\u00a0and the same\u00a0applies here\u00a0– friction will break the foam down. So,\u00a0a generous layer of polyester was added before the new fabric was attached.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSTEP 5: Winging it<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe wings were a bit funky as they didn\u2019t\u00a0quite\u00a0meet the back, so\u00a0webbing was added to make sure there wasn\u2019t a noticeable dip if you ran your hand along the outside wings.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSTEP 6: Layer by Layer<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSeat foam was removed, hessian was added as a barrier between springs, and new foam and polyester were added throughout the chair.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSTEP 7:\u00a0Finally\u00a0Fabric<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSo, finally\u2026 The fabric stage begins with the arms and arm facers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSTEP 8: All the Way<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThen move onto the seat,\u00a0back\u00a0and\u00a0the inside wings to complete the inside of the chair.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSTEP\u00a09: Outside Edge<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThen I move onto the outside where hessian and polyester\u00a0are\u00a0added throughout\u00a0the\u00a0outside too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSTEP 10: Closing Time<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAll sections of fabric are added and then I move on to the stage which I love\u00a0the most –\u00a0closing the chair by hand stitching (slip stitching<\/a>) all the back sections\u00a0to each\u00a0other. Satisfying!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSTEP 11: Every Comfort<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nA new seat cushion cover is made.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
STEP 12: Finishing Touches<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAt last,\u00a0it\u2019s time\u00a0to add the\u00a0bottom cloth\u00a0\u2013 always the very last part of the process followed by\u00a0a\u00a0final\u00a0good brush down.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nI then photograph and call the customer to arrange collection,\u00a0and we\u2019re done!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Satisfying!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSTEP 11: Every Comfort<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nA new seat cushion cover is made.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
STEP 12: Finishing Touches<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAt last,\u00a0it\u2019s time\u00a0to add the\u00a0bottom cloth\u00a0\u2013 always the very last part of the process followed by\u00a0a\u00a0final\u00a0good brush down.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
